Supplementary Information

1733:  Information contributed to INDEX OF NORTH CAROLINA ANCESTORS (North Carolina Genealogical Society, 1981) by DORIS ANN  BUTLER LUCAS (10146 W. Ave. I, Lancaster, CA 93534) contradicts Louisa Co., VA as the birth place of THOMAS POINDEXTER.  She  believes that he was born in England (Great Britain).  (Need to prove.)

1755 Jan 25:  CAPT. THOMAS POINDEXTER married his first wife, SUSAN HUGHES, who, according to family tradition, was the beautiful daughter of a wealthy Englishman who objected to their marriage.  One day, while plowing his tobacco, he received word from her that her parents were away and if he wanted to get married, now was the time.  Wearing a tow shirt and flax trousers, he  reportedly unhitched his horse from the plow, mounted him, and rode off to get his bride.  She sprang upon his horse, and they  went away to get married.  She died one year later, along with her newborn infant.  THOMAS later married  (2) E. P. ??, of Goochland Co., VA.  His third wife was ELIZABETH "BETTY" PLEDGE.  (Need to prove.)

1760 Feb 23:  CAPT. THOMAS POINDEXTER married ELIZABETH "BETTY" PLEDGE @Goochland Co., VA.  THOMAS "became a captain in the NC  militia during the American Revolution" and served for the duration.  BETTY PLEDGE was the second wife of THOMAS POINDEXTER. A family legend about Betty Pledge states that she was the daughter of an Indian chieftain; but this is apparently not true, for the will of WILLIAM PLEDGE (in Goochland Co., VA) names her parents as WILLIAM PLEDGE and MARTHA MILNER PLEDGE.  (For more information about BETTY PLEDGE's family, before her marriage, see family group sheet for WILLIAM PLEDGE, 985.SUP.)  The first wife of CAPT. THOMAS POINDEXTER was SUSAN HUGHES, whom he had married 25 Jan 1755.  (All this information extracted from THE  HERITAGE OF SURRY COUNTY--NORTH CAROLINA, ed. by Hester Jackson.)   According to another account, related in a series of letters published in the PILOT, a weekly newspaper published at East Bend  (Yadkin), NC, they "first lived at Old Richmond Court House, but later permanently located upon the hill just west of the  Yadkin River about 150 yards from where P. H. POINDEXTER" was residing in 1911.  In this PILOT article, Mr. Stimpson continued, "This section was then known as Bailey's Entry, which consisted of a mile square or 640 acres.  The southern boundary of this  entry began at the mouth of Bailey's Creek just above the river bluff, below Donnaha, thence west one mile, thence north to the  Yadkin River."  Mr. Stimpson also said that THOMAS POINDEXTER served as a captain in the Revolutionary War and was later a  farmer in the Yadkin Valley.  He said that after his death, in 1807, THOMAS POINDEXTER was buried in the Poindexter graveyard  "on top of a hill just across the river from Donnaha railroad station.  He had a sister who married a MR. APPERSON.  She died leaving one child, whose name was WILLIAM APPERSON.  She married again; but the new marriage so displeased the family that THOMAS POINDEXTER reportedly left a slave in VA, when he moved to NC, with instructions to kidnap the young WILLIAM and bring him to NC.  The slave did so, and he and the child caught up with the family en route to their new home in NC.  (I received this information from Marinelle Stowe, and it had been taken "from the notebook of Miss Flossie Martin, Hocksville, NC."  See POINDEXTER file, for the full text.)

1760 Dec 18:  ANN ("NANNIE") POINDEXTER was born, in Goochland Co., VA.  The date of her marriage to DANIEL SCOTT is not known. According to Gladys Lovell Uptegrove, ANN's husband b. ca. 1756 d. 1824.  They lived "in the Red House about a mile above the  old POINDEXTER home place, on the Yadkin River, south of Sycamore Ford.  This house was painted red, no one else had a painted  house at this time, so it was known as 'The Red House.'  The windows, doors, and staircase was shipped from England.  There  were portholes upstairs.  MRS. ELEANORA JOSEPHINE PHILLIPS APPERSON has the key to this house.  It is about four times the size  of a house key today."  See notes in POINDEXTER file.  DANIEL bur. near the Red House; see file on DANIEL SCOTT/ANN RADFORD  POINDEXTER, in the POINDEXTER file.

1764 Dec 9:  FRANCIS A. POINDEXTER, second child of CAPT. THOMAS POINDEXTER and BETTY, was born, in Goochland Co., VA.  According to information given by P. H. POINDEXTER (to whom it had been told by JOHN  POINDEXTER, his uncle, who had been born 8/8/1778) and passed to me by Marinelle Stowe (of Wetumpka, AL), this child's middle name was ARCHIBALD.  The date of his marriage to  MRS. JANE PATILLO LANIER is not known.  He served in the Revolutionary War.  He lived his life and died at Huntsville (Yadkin),  NC.  According to Albert Nason (Decatur, GA, 1997), JANE PATILLO LANIER was the daughter of REV. HENRY PATILLO, and she had  married CAPT. ROBERT LANIER.  JANE and FRANCIS POINDEXTER had a daughter named JANE POINDEXTER, who married ?? CLINGMAN.  They  had a son named THOMAS LANIER CLINGMAN.

1765:  THOMAS and ELIZABETH POINDEXTER arrived in North Carolina about this time and purchased "Bailey's Bottoms," in the bend of the Yadkin River, one mile west of Donnaha, which was located, at that time, in Surry County (now in Yadkin County).  Their home still stands there.

1766 Dec 7:  WILLIAM PLEDGE POINDEXTER was born to THOMAS POINDEXTER and ELIZABETH PLEDGE, at St. James Northam Parish, in  Goochland Co., VA (this information from page 77, THE DOUGLAS REGISTER (Richmond, VA: 1928), a register of births, christenings,  marriages, deaths and funerals kept by the REV. WILLIAM DOUGLAS who went to St. James Northam Parish, Goochland Co., VA (Dover  Church), in 1750, moved 1777--per SURRY COUNTY HERITAGE--NORTH CAROLINA).  He was named for his uncle (WILLIAM PLEDGE) and his  grandfather (WILLIAM PLEDGE of Goochland).  According to REV. THOMAS H. STIMPSON, who published POINDEXTER family chronicles in  the YADKIN VALLEY PILOT, East Bend, NC, during 1911, he was called "WAG" (per SURRY COUNTY HERITAGE--NORTH CAROLINA, edited by Hester B. Jackson, 1993).  His early education was given him by his mother, but he was later sent to school at Cross Creek (now called Fayetteville), NC.  He lead his class and graduated with honors.  He was reputed to be an exceptionally fine penman.  He was short in stature, weighing about 130 pounds, but supposedly very strong.

1768 Dec 18:  The fourth child was born to THOMAS and BETTY POINDEXTER--MARTHA MILNER POINDEXTER--at Goochland Co., VA.  (Need to prove, as this location is not consistent with the information that they supposedly had already made the move to NC.)  The date of MARTHA POINDEXTER's marriage to GEORGE PETTITT (his birth date, 27 May 1760) is unknown.

1770 Jan 3:  THOMAS PLEDGE POINDEXTER was born to CAPT. THOMAS POINDEXTER and his wife BETTY, supposedly in Goochland Co.,  VA.  (Need to reconcile this location with the information that the family had supposedly already moved to Surry Co., NC, by  this time.  He bought land in Surry County, one year later; so he had, for certain, moved there, by 1771.)

1771 Apr 15:  THOMAS POINDEXTER received/bought land from JAMES and HONOUR CARSON, 443 acres in Surry County, formerly Rowan  County, NC, on the south bank of the Yadkin River, opposite Yellow Banks.  He later sold this land.  See note below under  date 1774 Nov 3.  (SURRY COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA DEED BOOK A, pages 103-105)

1773:  ELIZABETH P. POINDEXTER ("BETTY") was born to THOMAS and BETTY POINDEXTER.  The date of her marriage to MAJ. THOMAS EVANS is unknown.  She married a second time, to ISAAC McCAMERON, per research done by GLADYS LOVELL UPTEGROVE, descendant of SARAH  UPTEGROVE LOVELL.  P. H. POINDEXTER, nephew of JOHN POINDEXTER (s. of THOMAS and BETTY POINDEXTER) stated that the surname of her second husband was McCAMMONS.  (Need to prove.)

1774 Nov 3:  THOMAS POINDEXTER, "Planter," sold to JOHN and THOMAS CARSON (also planters), of Rowan Co., NC, for 284 pds,  2 shillings, 2 pence, Virginia money. a tract of land, 443 acres, in Surry Co., formerly Rowan Co.  It was on the South bank  of the Yadkin River, opposite Yellow Banks.  It had been conveyed to THOMAS POINDEXTER by deed from JAMES CARSON and wife  HONOUR CARSON, on 15 Apr 1771.  The transaction also included the following Negroes:  JAMES, PHILIS, JANE, DOW, JAMES, COTTON,  SELAH, YOUNG, PHILIS, JUDITH.  THOMAS POINDEXTER was to pay before 3 Nov 1776.  Witnesses were JOHN WILLIAMS and JOHN BRALEY.   The document was signed by THOS. POYNDEXTER, JOHN CARSON, AND THOS. CARSON.  (This information from SURRY COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA  DEED BOOK A, pages 103-105.)

1775 Mar 11:  MARY ("POLLY") WENTWORTH POINDEXTER was born to THOMAS and BETTY PLEDGE.  The date of her marriage to JESSE RIDING is not known, but she was not married at the time that her father died, in 1807.

1778 Aug 8:  JOHN GEORGE POINDEXTER was born to THOMAS and BETTY POINDEXTER.

1779 Sep 20:  The state of North Carolina granted to THOMAS POINDEXTER 540 acres of land on both sides of HARRISON's Branch.  (SURRY COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA DEED BOOK A, page 311)

1783 Oct 13:  The State of North Carolina granted to THOMAS POINDEXTER 640 acres of land on the South bank of the Yadkin River, above JOB MARTIN.  (SURRY COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA DEED BOOK 13, page 279)

1784 Apr 6:  SARAH ("SALLIE") POINDEXTER was born to THOMAS and BETTY POINDEXTER.  The date of her marriage to JAMES LOVELL is not known.  Her husband died 25 Apr 1862.  She lived near Pilot Mountain, on the Old Jackson Place; and she was a physician.

1785 Mar 14:  THOMAS POINDEXTER deeded to WILLIAM PHILLIPS, for "5 pds specie" 300 acres, both sides of HARRISON's BRANCH, adjacent to 540 acres formerly surveyed for said POINDEXTER on Waddles Road.  Witnesses were FRANCIS POINDEXTER and  JESSE SCOTT, and the record was signed by THOS. POINDEXTER.  (SURRY COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA DEED BOOK C, pages 411-412)

1788 Jul 14:  ROBERT ALEXANDER POINDEXTER was born to THOMAS and BETTY POINDEXTER.  His first marriage was to MIRIAM FLYNN (b. 6 Feb 1787, d. 26 Nov 1818), and the date of their marriage is unknown.  After her death, he married CHARLOTTE MARTIN  PETTIT (widow of BENJAMIN PETTIT; her birthdate being 5 May 1795, death date 1 Mar 1865).

Church, on the road between East Bend and Donnaha.  They lived here a short time, before buying a tract of land that lay in Surry County, just above the railroad station of Shoals, NC. They farmed this land, with the help of a few slaves.  Though a farmer, he loved hunting and fishing and had the reputation of being an excellent deer hunter, reportedly killing more deer than any other white man in North Carolina.  For more information regarding their marriage and descendants, see the family group sheet for WILLIAM PLEDGE POINDEXTER, 245.SUP.

1842 Apr 5:  ROBERT ALEXANDER POINDEXTER died, this date, probably @Surry Co., NC.  He was buried in the family cemetery.  Need  to prove.

1844 Mar 3:  WILLIAM PLEDGE POINDEXTER died, this date @Surry Co., NC and was buried in the old family graveyard, in the same county.

1844 Jul 15:  Will of FRANCIS A. POINDEXTER was written this date.  I am not sure who this person is.  He is not CAPT. FRANCIS A. POINDEXTER, who died in 1800.  This person's wife was named as PATIENCE POINDEXTER, in his will, and his father was named as  ROBERT POINDEXTER, deceased.  The father might have been ROBERT POINDEXTER, son of CAPT. THOMAS POINDEXTER (brother of  CAPT. FRANCIS A. POINDEXTER), who died 5 Apr 1842 (see note, above).  The will named his brothers as ARCHEBALD POINDEXTER and  ROBERT POINDEXTER, who were executors of his estate.  The will was witnessed by NATHANILE SCALES, WILLIAM F. RANDLEMAN.  It was  signed by FRANCIS A. POINDEXTER.  The will was probated in the August Court 1844.  (SURRY COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA WILL BOOK 4,  page 220)  Need to prove connection.
