1870 August: On Aug 10,
1870 September: WILLIAM M. BECKETT and J. Z. BECKETT petitioned the Court of Probate to allow them to sell the BECKETT land, in order to cover debts of the W. O. BECKETT estate, the prior sale of W. O. BECKETT's personal property having been insufficient to cover said debt. It further named "two grandchildren, the children of S. W. BECKETT deceased who are minors under 14 years of age, and named FRANCES A. and WALTER BECKETT, who live with and are under the control of their mother AMY BECKETT, who was the widow of said S. W. BECKETT, who has since intermarried with JOHN FLOURNOY, the said AMY and JOHN being over 21 years and who reside near Davis Creek Post Office, in Fayette County, Alabama. The said S. W. BECKETT having died before the said WM. O. BECKETT, to wit. in 1864." (See BECKETT file for photocopy of record, also transcript under file name WOBKTA.RNO)
1871 Oct 20: Final report by administrators of W. O.
BECKETT estate to the court, for settlement.
It was presented 20 Sep 1871, recorded 31 Oct 1871. (
1871 Oct 31: Final settlement and distribution of W. O.
BECKETT estate. It again named the four
living children of WILLIAM O. BECKETT and the two children of his deceased son
S. W. BECKETT—i.e., WALTER BECKETT and FRANCES A. BECKETT. It also named JOHN BOSTOCK, ESQUIRE as the
court-appointed guardian ad litem for the
interests of WALTER and FRANCES. The
total assets of the estate came to $4418.27.
After debts amounting to $3,134.20 were paid, the remainder was
$1284.07, which was divided among the four children and two grandchildren. Each of WILLIAM O. BECKETT's
children received from the estate $256.81, and the two grandchildren shared the
portion that would have been their father's, a total of $128.40, per

moved his family from
1871 Dec 30: JONATHAN Z. BECKETT received from JOHN BOSTOCK, Commissioner, the tract of land described as "the South west quarter and west half of the South East quarter and the South west quarter of the North west quarter; and about 10 acres in/of the west side of the East of the South East quarter, and about 5 acres on the west side of the South East of the North East quarter, all in Section two (2) Township twenty three in Range twenty one being in the County of Tallapoosa and State of Alabama." The record conveyed "all such title and interest as WILLIAM O. BECKETT deceased had in an to the under described real estate at the time of his death to JOHNATHAN Z. BECKETT who was at the time of the sale of said lands one of the administrators of the Estate of said WILLIAM O. BECKETT deceased, the said order being made and entered in the premises by said Judge of Probate." No mention was made of money exchanged, and it appears to have been a grant. 1873 Aug 6: ALEXANDER HOPSON and wife FRANCIS A. HOPSON,
of Sandford County, Alabama, gave Power of Attorney
to JOHN SCOTT, of Tallapoosa County, Alabama (her mother's brother-in-law)
to recover monies due her from the estate of her grandfather, WILLIAM O.
BECKETT. ALEXANDER HOPSON was FANNIE BECKETT's first husband.
(Interestingly, A. L. STOWE, who was the brother of AMY (uncle of
FRANCIS) and J. B. WILLIAMS attested to the signatures. Certified 31 Jan 1874, in
1874 Apr 2: JOHN W. SCOTT petitioned the Probate Court to
name him as Guardian of the estate of WALTER BECKETT, "minor heir of S. W.
BECKET, deceased. The record stated that

57, “keeping house,” and had “partial insanity,” with her state of health given

household of CISERO C. DOSS, who was age 34, a farmer, born in AL (his father
born in GA, his mother’s birth place left blank). His wife FRANCIS A. DOSS was agae 24, born in
1880 Sep-Oct: On Sep 8, JOHN W. SCOTT, Guardian for WILLIAM WALTER BECKETT's share of the W. O. BECKETT estate, appeared in Probate Court and obtained orders for the final settlement of the WALTER W. BECKETT estate. The final hearing took place on Oct 5th, for the decree and final settlement of the estate. The record stated that JOHN SCOTT had received $190.25 from the estate and had expended $40.39, leaving a balance of $149.14, to be paid to WALTER, who had reached the age of 21. 1880 Dec 23: WILLIAM
WALTER BECKETT married LOUISA MONGREELY DOSS, probably in Calhoun Co.,
WILLIAM WALTER BECKETT owned 15 mules, according to
Rena Beckett Johnson (told to F. E. Beckett, 1989; see transcript of
interview). She said he also had hogs,
cows, and geese (used for feathers for bedding, as well as for food). They gathered eggs from guinea nests, in the
woods. They also had fruit trees. There was a cistern in the corner of the
porch to their house, according to Rena Johnson; and the porch was “over
it.” A gutter line was run, to go down to
the cistern. The girls in the family
milked the cows. All the children had
work to do. They rode to church (

1904 Nov 24: OLIVE LENORAH ("OLLIE") BECKETT
died, probably of appendicitis. She had
been engaged to marry CHARLIE (CHARLES TAYLOR) LANGHAM, and her death came just
one week before they were to have been married.
She had been close to her sister LIZZIE; so it was only natural that
LIZZIE and CHARLIE would become close, in their shared grief over her
death. After about a year, LIZZIE and
CHARLIE married. (This information
related by MINNIE RAY BECKETT
1904 Dec 11: MARION BECKETT married PARADINE WILKINS
either at Water Valley (Yalobusha), MS, or else at the Concord Church, west of
Freedom (Calhoun), MS (the community later incorporated as the town of Bruce,
in 1927). Not sure which location is

1918 Jul 14: CULLEN CORNELIUS BECKETT married MARTHA JANE ("JANIE") COOK in Calhoun Co., MS.
1919: LEE ROY BECKETT was discharged from the army
(after having served in World War I), at Little Rock (Pulaski), AR. He took MARVIN BECKETT home with him, to
Mississippi. (Note: MARVIN BECKETT was the son of JONATHAN
ZEPHANIAH BECKETT, who was the uncle of WILLIAM WALTER BECKETT; J. Z. BECKETT
and his brother WILLIAM MARION BECKETT had moved their families from Alabama to
Arkansas in the 1870's. The latter had
moved 1870/71, but his brother J. Z. BECKETT had moved later, in the mid-1870;
see the family group record for WILLIAM O. BECKETT. It is doubtful WILLIAM WALTER BECKETT had
even seen his uncles since he was around 10 years old. MARVIN BECKETT was born after 1880, in Texas,
so he and WILLIAM WALTER had never met.)

Note: W. W. BECKETT had owned three houses on this property. Two of the houses had been occupied by the CHARLIE BRANUM and CULLEN BECKETT families. The BRUCE CO. bought property from three other property owners, in addition to W. W. BECKETT, for the lumber mill. By 1927, the town and the mill had been established here. (See note, below, that year.) The company became famous for “Bruce flooring,” which was hardwood flooring which had become popular, at this time. A huge oak tree that had once stood in W. W. BECKETT’s barn lot, still stands (as of 1999), just a few blocks away, northwest of the Bruce square (now in the yard of a local homeowner).
1925 Oct 14: THOMAS A. BECKETT married VALLIE AGNES BURGESS in Calhoun Co., MS.
1927 May 10: Petition of incorporation was filed for the
village of Bruce, in Calhoun County, MS, with one of the three aldermen to be
W. W. BECKETT. Three BECKETTs
signed the petition--W. W. BECKETT, L. M. BECKETT (his wife), and C. M.
BECKETT. The proclamation by GOVERNOR
DENNIS MURPHREE, incorporating the village of Bruce was dated June 16,
1927. Land on which Bruce was founded
had been owned by W. W. BECKETT, who had sold it to the BRUCE COMPANY, in
1924/25. His grandson F. E. BECKETT (son
of THOMAS A. BECKETT) was the first baby to be born in Bruce, once the
procedures to incorporate began. The
petitioners whose names appear on the proclamation were: W. W. BECKETT, W. H. WHITE, L. M. BECKETT (this being LOUISA M. DOSS BECKETT, wife of
W. W. BECKETT), R. A. TYSON, D. E. LESTER, and C. M. BECKETT (this being CHARLIE MITCHELL BECKETT, son of

Living in Dwelling 41 (Family 67) was the household
of W. W. BECKETT, who was age 71, had been married since age 21, owned his farm
(“general farm,” Farm Schedule 2), and was born in AL. (The census taker wrote “United States” as
birth place for each of the parents of W. W. and L.M. Beckett.) He could read and write. His wife L. M. BECKETT was age 65 and had
been married since age 15. She also
could read and write. Two other people
were living with them, both born in MS—(1) MINNIE R. BECKETT (daughter, age 17,
single) and (2) LOUIS BECKETT (grandson, age 22, single, laborer on the

1935 Mar 9: MINNIE RAY BECKETT married HAROLD EDWIN
BALDWIN (probably in
1935 Apr 22: WILLIAM WALTER BECKETT died, at his home, at
Bruce (Calhoun), MS, per his obituary in a Calhoun City, MS, newspaper, the Monitor
Herald, on 25 Apr 1935. "Funeral
services were conducted Tuesday at the Methodist Church at Bruce by Revs. R. E. WASSON, pastor of the Pittsboro-Bruce
M. E. Church circuit, and D. H. CROWSON of Calhoun City, with interment
immediately afterwards at the cemetery at Antioch church, with Masonic
honors." He had lived in Calhoun
County "for more than forty years and was recognized as an upright
citizen and a man of highest integrity.
Throughout his life he was identified with all movements for the good of
the community and county--was interested in better schools, the development of
all religious work and in the enforcement of the laws of the state. MR. BECKETT was appreciated by the people of
the county and was held in high regard by them.
During his long life, he lived in a clean and moral way and was truly a
useful citizen. He is survived by his
widow MRS. LOUISA BECKETT; by six daughters, MESDAMES Z. R. HASTING, CHARLEY
BRANNON, H. E. BALDWIN, LUKE SHELTON, JAKE SHELTON, and G. L. BRAMLITT, all of
Bruce; by four sons, C. C. BECKETT, THOMAS BECKETT, AND C. M. BECKETT, of
Bruce, and L. R. BECKETT, of Pittsboro; by two half sisters, MRS. BYRON of Mathiston, and MRS. JEFF LAND, of Slate Spring." (At the head of the column are the words,
"W. W. Beckett Is claimed By death, progressive Bruce farmer laid at
rest Tuesday at Antioch--splendid citizen.") Cause of death, per death certificate, was “Myocardial
Insufficiency.” The death
certificate also named his father as WILSON BECKETT. (See BECKETT file for copy of his death
certificate and photocopy of the above-mentioned obituary.)
1935 Apr 30: LOUISA
BECKETT died in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, LENA and LUTHER
EARNEST SHELTON, possibly of pneumonia.
(On the death certificate, the primary cause of death is difficult to
read, but "nephritis" is given as the "contributing
cause.") The date is taken from her
death certificate, which states that death was at 1:30 am (see BECKETT file
for copy of certificate). According
to her obituary, she "had been seriously ill for some days and was very
low at the time her husband W. W. BECKETT died." Funeral services were conducted at Bruce,
"held by REV. D. H. CROWSON of Calhoun City, assisted by REV. R. E. WASSON
of Pittsboro." The obituary
described LOUISA as "a kindly and lovable lady. She was, prior to her marriage, MISS LOUISA
DOSS and was reared in this county. She
was a member of the Methodist Church and lived her religion in her everyday
life. Her influence for good was
reflected in the community where she lived, her high character and Christian
service having helped her neighbors in their joys and sorrows." It named as her survivors the six daughters
and four sons named in the obituary of her husband, the previous week, adding
to that list, "one brother ELBERT DOSS, of Slate Spring, and one sister,
MRS. T. HYDE, of Mathiston." (Copy of her death

1964 Feb 20: This death date for LEE ROY BECKETT is per obituary, printed in a Calhoun Co., MS, newspaper. See BECKETT file, for photocopy of this record. According to the obituary, he was buried on 22 Feb 1964.
