1882: History of
CHARLES PRICKETT, farmer, P.O. Coal City, was born October 16, 1829, in Logan County, Ohio; is a son of James and Rebecca Prickett. The parents came to Kendall County, Ill., in 1833. They had seven children, viz., Elijah, Joel, Charles, John, Aaron, Elizabeth, Jane. He has always been a farmer. Was married, February 6, 1858, to Adeline A. Holderman, the result being twelve children, viz., Jane E., George, Byron, Jacob, Rhua, Melissa, Joel, Nellie, Burton C., Rose, Elizabeth, Anthony. He settled at his marriage near Morris, this county, and in 1864 he bought his present farm of 160 acres, and has lived on the same since. He has been Highway Commissioner, Tax Collector and Constable; votes Republican ticket; takes an interest in educating his children.
1883 Mar. 8: Byron Pricket married Chloe Jennie Comstock.
1885 Jun. 9: Byron “Pickett” (age 28), his wife Jennie (age 23), his daughter “Medera” (age 11/12), and his brothers Jacob (age 24) and Joel (age 21) were enumerated in Midway Borough, Renben Township, Harlan County, Nebraska, in the Nebraska State Census.
1886 Jan. 27: Jane Ellen Prickett married Charles Egner Miller in Grundy Co., Illinois. Marriage record is on file with the Grundy Co., IL, Clerk and Recorder (#5674)
1886 Jun.: Rheu Ann Prickett homesteaded in CO. NE ¼ S 9, T 1N, R 47W of 6th PM for 160 acres granted 17 March 1892.
1887 Jun.: Jacob Prickett homesteaded in CO. Homestead granted for SE ¼ S 9, T 1N, R 47W of 6th PM on 16 November 1894.
1888 Dec. 6: Charles and Adeline Prickett sold their farm in Grundy County, IL, and homesteaded near Vernon (Yuma), CO. (SW ¼ of S 11, T 1S, R 45W of 6th PM). Homestead was granted in 1898.
1889 Apr. 24: Adaline A. Prickett of Arapahoe County, Colorado, purchased the SW ¼ of S 12, T 1S, R 45W of 6th PM from James L. Brady also of Arapahoe County, Colorado, for $1000. (Record is on file in Denver County Courthouse, Denver, Colorado.)
1889 Jul. 3: Joel A. Prickett filed a timber claim on land in Yuma Co., CO. Homestead claim was granted on 10 April 1902 for N ½ of SW ¼ and S ½ of NW ¼ of S 21, T 1S, R 44W of 6th PM. Joel was the first blacksmith in Vernon (Yuma), CO.
1890 Feb. 26: Joel Andrew Prickett married Clarisia Adora Shepard in Yuma Co., CO. Marriage record is on file with Yuma Co. Clerk and Recorder.
1890 Aug. 17: Rheu Ann Prickett left her homestead to begin working in Denver (Denver), CO. She remained working in Denver until 10 February 1891.
1891 Mar. 2: Date of issue of a land patent to George M. Prickett for the SE ¼ of Section 1, Township 1 N, Range 48 W of 6th PM in Yuma County, Colorado.
1892 May 8: Rheu Ann Prickett married Peter Bergeron in Yuma Co., CO. Marriage record is on file with Yuma Co. Clerk and Recorder.
1894 Mar. 3: Elizabeth Prickett married Lewis P. Callaway in Yuma Co., CO. Marriage record is on file with Yuma Co. Clerk and Recorder. The Callaways later moved to Unadilla (Otoe), NE, according to Lucy Stevens (wife of Joel Andrew Prickett's son, Reno).
1894 Jun. 12: Rose Ann Prickett married Albert Frank Smith in Yuma Co., CO. Marriage record is on file with Yuma Co. Clerk and Recorder. Rose and Albert were divorced by 1900 as indicated in the 1900 Federal Census.
1900 Jun. 8: Federal Census shows Byron Prickett living in Alma (Harlan), NE, ED 92, S 4, L 73, with wife Jennie (b. Sep. 1862 in IL), and daughters Dora M. (b. Jul 1884 in NE), Jennie E. (b. Oct. 1887 in NE), and Emma E. (b. Feb. 1892 in NE).
1900 Jun. 18: Federal Census shows Elizabeth Prickett Callaway living in T9, R10, in Otoe Co., NE, ED 120, S 6, L 8, with husband Lewis Callaway (b. Feb. 1855 in England), and daughters Melissa (b. Feb. 1895 in CO) and Mary (b. Feb. 1896 in CO), and son William (b. Dec. 1898 in CO).
1900 Jun. 22: Federal Census shows Adeline living with her daughter Rose Ann Smith and Rose Ann's son, Roy (b. Feb. 1898), and a grandson named Clyde. (ED 140, S 4, L 56, Arapahoe County, CO) by Grant B. Cox. Burton C. Prickett is listed in the next dwelling.

Amanda Holderman Prickett died of "senile dementia". Her death
certificate is on file with the Colorado State Department of Health and
indicates that her father was Jacob Holderman (correct) born in

1938 Nov. 3: Article in The Wray Gazette:
Joel A. Prickett, son of Charles and Adeline Prickett, was born June 7, 1864 in Grundy County, Illinois. He remained in the home of his parents until the age of 20, when he went to Nebraska, locating near Orleans. While there he was converted and became an active member of the Baptist Church. Four years later he moved to Vernon, Colorado, homesteading on what is now the Churchill place, living there ten years. The he moved onto the home place where he remained until his demise.
He was married to Clarisia Adora Shepard on February 26, 1890. To this union were born seven daughters and one son – Nellie Sankey of Republic, Kansas; Iva Smith of Superior, Nebraska; Eva Crandell of Wray; Amy Lambert of Haigler, Nebraska; Hazel Schroeder of Woodburn, Oregon; Olive Higgenbotham of Eaton, Colorado; and Reno Prickett of Eaton, Colorado. The second daughter departed this life in 1908 at the age of 14 years.
His wife, Adora, departed this life January 6, 1930. On September 22, 1931, he chose for his companion, Mrs. Jennie E. Prickett of Alma, Nebraska who was a faithful helper throughout his suffering. He passed away on October 27, 1938 at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 20 days after an illness of nearly a year. He is also survived by four sisters and three brothers. Funeral services were on October 30 with interment in Glendale Cemetery.
1939 Oct. 12: Article in the Tomah Journal Monitor Herald, Tomah, Wisconsin:
George M. Prickett Passes Away Sunday. George M. Prickett, confined to his bed since early in April, 1938, with a lingering illness, passed away early Sunday morning, October 8, 1939. At no time during his illness had there been any hope of his recovery. Mr. Prickett was in his 84th year. His thoughts were always concerned with the comfort of the family, wishing to spare them as much work and anxiety as possible.
Mr. Prickett, son of Charles and Adaline Holderman Prickett, was born in Morris, Illinois, on New Year’s day, 1856. There were six sisters and five brothers in the family. Four sisters and two brothers survive him.
In 1882 he was united in marriage with Rebecca K. Marshall. To this union one son and six daughters were born. The son, Wilbur Marshall, and four daughters, Eunice, Maude, Georgia and Eleanor live in the town of La Grange; Mae, Mrs. Raymond E. Dixon, lives in Lexington, Virginia. Lula Vera died in infancy.
There are two grandchildren, Mrs. Charles A. George of Lexington, Virginia and Robert B. Dixon of Washington, D.C.
In his early life George united with the Presbyterian church in Nebraska and served as a deacon. Later he transferred his membership to the Methodist church in Tomah.
Mr. Prickett taught school for a time, was a business man, and since coming to Wisconsin had been a farmer. He served the community as town clerk for a number of years.
Funeral services were held in the home on Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. Bernard C. Herrick, officiating. The body was laid to rest in the La Grange Cemetery.

MRS. JANE ELLEN MILLER, 85, OF KERSEY IS DEAD.
Mrs. Jane Ellen Miller, 85, of Kersey died at her home Tuesday. Survivors include six children: F.E. and G.W. Miller of Eaton, D.H. Miller of Greeley, N.W. and Roscoe Miller of Kersey, and Mrs. May Munday of Identa, Kan., two sisters, Mrs. Ruha Burgun of Fort Morgan and Mrs. Rose Clausen of Vernon, Colo., and two brothers, Bert Prickett and Jake Prickett of Vernon. Funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Sattley Funeral Home chapel with interment at Eaton cemetery.
1940 Apr. 18: Article in The Wray Gazette:
Burton C. Prickett, 72, died at the county hospital on Monday, April 15. He was a single man, but is survived here in this community by several relatives. Funeral services will be held this afternoon in the Vernon Methodist Church and interment will be made in Glendale Cemetery at Vernon.
Burton Cook Prickett, son of Charles and Adeline Prickett was born at Braidwood, Grundy County, Illinois on September 8, 1867 and passed away at Wray, Colorado on April 15, 1940 at the age of 72 years, 7 months and 7 days. He came to Colorado in 1889. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Those remaining are Jacob of Yuma, Colorado; Mrs. Rhuea Bergeron of Fort Morgan, Colorado; Mrs. Elizabeth Callaway of Unidilla, Nebraska and Mrs. Rosie Clawson of Abarr, Colorado.
1941 Jan. 17: In an affidavit supporting the delayed birth certificate of her nephew, George William Miller, Rheu Ann Prickett Bergeron indicated that her address was 613 W. Olive St., Ft. Collins (Larimer), CO.
1943 Mar. 11: Article in The Wray Gazette:
Jacob Prickett, 81, bachelor and recluse who resided for many years at a farm home a mile west and four miles south of Schramm, was burned to death sometime between midnight and 6 o’clock Monday morning by a fire that consumed the house and his personal effects. Neighbors reported to officers that there was no evidence of the fire shortly before midnight Sunday night, but Monday morning they discovered that the small residence had burned to the ground.
Mr. Prickett was known to many residents of the county who had been attracted by his unusual appearance. He was crippled and for years had refused to cut his hair or beard.
The deceased was born on January 9, 1862 at Morris, Illinois. He came to Colorado in 1887 and had resided here since. A brother, Bert Prickett, died on April 18, 1940. Mrs. Rosa Clawson of Abarr, is a sister.
Malissa: According to Lucy Stevens, Charles Prickett simply indicated that Malissa died young.
