1830 FEDERAL CENSUS--NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA (no townships listed):

The family of C. STOW was listed on page 160. Do not know what/if any relation to our STOW/STOWE family.

1830 FEDERAL CENSUS--GEORGIA:  Could not find HECTOR RALLS/RAWLS listed in index to this census.  There were numerous other RAWLS surnames.

1832 Jul 30:  ABRAHAM ROBINSON STOW was married to SALLIE FRANCIS POINDEXTER, in Surry Co., NC.  He was also known as ABRAM STOWE, and his wife was also known as FRANCES STOWE.   (This information per Thomas Stowe, of Wetumpka, AL, 1990.)

1832/1835:  ABRAHAM R. STOWE and wife SALLIE FRANCES POINDEXTER STOWE moved to Alabama sometime during this period, between the time of their wedding and the birth of their second child, who was reportedly born in Alabama (per census records).    Their first child WILLIAM UPTEGROVE STOWE was born 30 Apr 1833 in Surry Co., NC, but the second child AMY ELIZABETH STOWE was born 8 September 1835 in AL, per her tombstone inscription.  According to Mrs. Thomas Poindexter Stowe, of Wetumpka, AL, (Source 1, see top of supplementary notes), "ABRAHAM and FRANCIS POINDEXTER STOWE came to Alabama from Surry Co., NC, arriving there 2 March 1838.   The trip took 5 weeks."  Need to reconcile. There were still ABRAHAM STOWE households living in North Carolina, at the time of the 1840 Federal Census.  (Perhaps he still owned land, there?  Perhaps these are relatives with the same name?  Need to prove.)  (See also 1840 Census note, below.)

1833 Apr 30:  WILLIAM GREEN UPTEGROVE STOWE was born in Surry Co., NC this date.  He later married MATHILDA ANN MILES, date and place unknown.

1835 Sep 9:  AMY ELIZABETH (STOWE) BECKETT was born this date in AL.

1838 Jul 8:  JOEL C. STOWE was born in AL.

1840 FEDERAL CENSUS--NORTH CAROLINA:  Eleven STOW families were living in Surry County, NC, and two STOW families, in Lincoln County, at this time.  For details regarding these families, see supplementary information on family group records for ABRAHAM R. STOWE and JOEL STOWE.

1840:  The first census of Tallapoosa County, Alabama, was taken in 1840, by southwestern humorist JOHNSON JONES HOOPER.  He had been born in Wilmington, NC, in 1815 and had moved westward at age 20, settling in Lafayette, Alabama, where he joined his brother’s law firm.  It is here that he took the census of Tallapoosa County and gained access to the lives of the frontier families on whom he based his humorous tales of the fictional character Simon Suggs.  His first story was published in 1843, in William T. Porter’s Spirit of the Times, a New York weekly publication.  Simon Suggs came to life in a yarn called, "Taking the Census."  In it, he created caricatures and used local dialects for their humorous effect.   Both A. R. STOW and JOEL STOW were included in this first census of Tallapoosa County.  (See STOWE file, for photocopy of this census list.  See also http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/HNS/Swhumor/ahooper.htm for a photograph of HOOPER and a discussion of his works.)

Hooper convinced the census marshal to include the following note at the end of the census report:  This is to certify that the subscribers are well acquainted with Tallapoosa County, and they willingly state that it is a large county—that it being very thinly populated and the Tallapoosa River running through it, making any transit like that of taking the census particularly difficult.  The extreme length of the county is 48 miles and its bredth 24 miles…the families generally in this county are very small, averaging only eight and a fraction.

1840 FEDERAL CENSUS--TALLAPOOSA COUNTY, ALABAMA (Southern District of Alabama, no township listed, M704_15, taken by J. J. Hooper), page 162:

Listed on line14 was the household of A. R. STOW, consisting of one male and one female under age 5, one male age 15-19, one male and one female age 20-29.  No marks were made in the spaces for slaves, but in the “Total” column, the number “2” was inserted.  The number “5” was written at the beginning of the second page, which was the number of free white persons indicated on the first page.  I believe they may have had 2 slaves.  Need to prove.  See census microfilm image, in STOWE file.  The name is spelled “STOW.”

Listed on line 14 was the household of JOEL STOW (name spelled this way) consisting of one male age 15-19, one male and one female age 20-29, one male age 50-59, and one female age 40-49.   No marks were made in the spaces for slaves, but in the “Total” column, the number “10” was inserted.  The number “5” was written at the beginning of the second page, which was the number of free white persons indicated on the first page.  Need to reconcile.  Did they have 10 slaves?  See census microfilm image, in STOWE file.

Note:  See STOWE file, for census microfilm images and worksheet.

STOWE, age 37, a male, a physician by occupation.  He listed real estate valued at $6000 and personal estate value of $3400.  He was born in NC.  He had been married within the year.  His wife was named as  INDIANNA STOWE, age 23, born in GA.   Note:  According to the 1860 Slave Schedule for Tallapoosa Co., AL (Beat 14, taken by J. CRITTENDON 6 Sep 1860, page 38), J. A. STOWE owned 3 slaves and had one "slave house."  (The slaves included 1 female age 24, 1 male age 16, and 1 female age 1.)  J. A. STOWE was the brother of ABRAM STOWE.

STOWE (age 10), (2) PERKINS H. STOWE (age 7) and (3) NANCY F. STOWE (age 2).  Living with them was SAMUEL L. YOUNG, age 21, no real estate  value given for him, personal estate valued at $1400, born in AL. (Samuel Young was NANCY YOUNG STOWE's son, by her former marriage; see  note under 1850 Federal Census.)

1860 FEDERAL CENSUS--TALLAPOOSA CO., ALABAMA (Beat 10, taken 18 Sep 1860 by SOLOMON T. STRICKLAND, page 2):

ABRAM R. STOWE was listed as 48 years old, a farmer, with real estate valued at $3000 and personal property valued at $4250. His wife FRANCIS STOWE was age 46. STRICKLAND, page 32), JOEL STOWE owned 2 slaves (1 male age 12, 1 female age 8) and one slave house.  (This is probably the father of ABRAM STOWE.)

NOTE:  See family group records for SAMUEL WILSON BECKETT, for details regarding ABRAM STOWE's daughter AMY ELIZABETH STOWE BECKETT.

1861 Nov 28:  TILLIE PARKER STOWE, second wife of ISAAC P. STOWE, was born this date, per her tombstone.  She was buried in the  STOWE plot, in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, south of Alexander City, Alabama, Tallapoosa County (near intersection of Hwy. 63 and 128).  Epitaph reads, "Precious mother, we shall meet you in that peaceful home." (Copied by CCM 9 Aug 1990)

1863 Dec 24:  JOHN W. SCOTT married POLLY FRANCES STOWE, at Tallapoosa Co., AL, with JOHN A. STOWE his bondsman, license granted Dec 23rd.  The ceremony was performed by J. M. BERRY, J. P. (per Tallapoosa County Alabama Marriage Records, Book V, page 318; see STOWE file for photocopy of the record).  At the time of their marriage, JOHN was on furlough, recovering from wounds which he had received on Sep 20th, at the Battle of Chicamauga.  After their marriage, he returned to military service the following May 6th, when he was present for duty at the Wilderness.  JOHN served in the same regiment as GEORGE MADISON BECKETT--the 47th  Alabama Infantry Regiment.  For more details on his military service, based on official records, see Some Early Pioneer  Settlers of Tallapoosa County Alabama, by Sandra S. Wilson (photocopy in STOWE file). JOHN SCOTT's father was JAMES D. SCOTT, who had moved to Chambers Co., AL, from Newton Co., GA, sometime after 1839, the year  JOHN W. SCOTT was born.  By 1850, his family was living at Stowe Ferry, in Tallapoosa Co.  Several members of the SCOTT family operated the Stowe Ferry, over the years.  (See Some Early Pioneer Settlers of Tallapoosa County Alabama, by Sandra S. Wilson, for more details on the SCOTT family.)

1864 Mar 15:  JOEL C. STOWE died of Civil War injuries received at the Battle of Gettysburg (PA).  He was buried near the Cumberland River, on the battlefield.

1864 June:  ABRAHAM LEROY STOWE entered service in the CSA at the rank of private, at Talladega, Alabama, per Census or Enumeration of Confederate Soldiers Residing In Alabama 1907.   According to his military record, he served in Company B, 8th (HATCH's) Regiment Alabama Cavalry, CSA.  (See also note under 4 May 1865.)

1864 July:  GENERAL SHERMAN, who was headed for Atlanta, decided to send MAJOR GENERAL LOVELL H. ROUSSEAU on a raid from Decatur to the Montgomery West Point Railroad, in order to cut off the railroad from Atlanta to Montgomery.  The column of five federal cavalry regiments passed through Tallapoosa County on their way to destroy the railroad at Opelika.  They reached Talladega on July 15th.  According to Saxon Stowe (great grandson of Abraham Robinson Stowe), in his Stowe History, Rousseau’s men swapped their exhausted cavalry horses for fresh ones from the horse lot of Abraham Robinson Stowe.  The cavalry fed their soldiers and horses from the barn, fields, smokehouses, beehives, cattle or poultry, wherever they found it.  From Talladega, his raiders moved on to Sylacauga, destroying and pillaging.  He feited due south toward Montgomery, then swung east at Rockford.   Captain Thomas A. Elkin of the 5th Kentucky Cavalry in the lead detachment rode into Youngsville about 6:00 P.M. on the 16th. The Yankees scavenged, burned the business houses and burned four tax-in-kind warehouses containing grain, cornmeal, and bacon.  (This is where the government was storing one-tenth of the production of the land.)  They burned the village.  That evening, they reached Stowe’s Ferry on the Tallapoosa River, enroute to Wetumpka.  They spent the night crossing the river, in the shoals above the ferry. COL. WILLIAM D. HAMILTON of the 9th Ohio recalled later, “Ever after we referred to the crossing of that river in the night with shudders. . . unpleasant as that of any battle  The raiders arrived at Dadeville, AL, about church time, on the 17th, skirmishing, enroute, with a party of Confederates who had been sent out belatedly to destroy Stowe’s Ferry, in order to delay the expedition.  By sunset, they were at the West Point Railroad, at Loachapoka.  They destroyed many miles of railroad track.

Note:  Local history says that when they came through the Stowe's Ferry area, they "messed up everything," killing all the livestock and destroying personal belongings of the families who lived in their path.  They took the featherbed mattresses outside and tore them apart with their bayonets, according to MRS. JESSE M. VINES, whose grandmother related this story to her (per Some Early Settlers of  Tallapoosa County Alabama).  They ransacked and burned the Flint Hill Methodist Church, which was being used as a Confederate hospital, on their way to the Tallapoosa River, arriving there, by evening.  It was swollen, hampering their crossing; so ROUSSEAU sent COLONEL HAMILTON downstream, where he found an elderly Black man and forced him to lead them to Stowe's Ferry (owned and operated by the family of AMY E. (STOWE) BECKETT), so that they could ford their artillery and  ambulances.  At gun point, he was forced  to show them the ford; and they crossed the treacherous waters, under darkness of night, with  men stationed about 50 feet apart.  The Black man was killed, when he and his pack mule were swept over a boulder by the swift current.  He was the only casualty of Rousseau’s raids in the area.  (See History Of Tallapoosa County Alabama and also STOWE file, for details taken from The Alabama Historical Quarterly  and Stowe History, by Stowe Saxon.)

The Montgomery Weekly Advertiser (newspaper), on Aug 19, 1864, stated that ROUSSEAU's cavalry probably passed through or near Stowe’s Ferry, which was located near the center of the Southwest 1/4 of Section 4, Range 22 East, Township 22 North.  (Today, the location of the ferry is covered by the backwater of Martin Dam, according to SANDRA S. WILSON, researcher and compiler of Some Early Pioneer Settlers of  Tallapoosa County Alabama, 1986; see photocopy from this publication, in STOWE file.)

1865 Jan 14:  JOHN W. SCOTT, husband of POLLY STOWE SCOTT, was near Richmond, VA, with Co. F, the 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment, per historical roll.  He had enlisted 13 May 1862, at Loachapoka, AL; he was wounded at Manassas, on Aug 29th.  He was absent at Sharpsburg, on September 1st because of the wounds he had suffered at Manassas (was recuperating).  He was present for duty at Fredericksburg, on December 13th.  The following July (1863) he was fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg (2 Jul 1863), and  on through Chicamauga, where he was wounded, again, on September 20th.  He was absent (on furlough) at Lookout Mountain, and on  through Dandridge, on 14 Jan 1864.  He probably was recuperating at home, in Tallapoosa Co., for during this time, in December  1863, he and POLLY STOWE were married.  By May 6th, he was back on duty, at the Wilderness.  He was at Darbytown Road, on  Dec 10th.  His Civil War Pension Application, No.3694, dated 2 Jul 1889 says, "He was shot through the thigh cutting the  leaders and through right hip passing out through left thigh."  (See Some Early Pioneer Settlers of Tallapoosa County Alabama,  photocopy in STOWE file.)

1865 May 4:  A. L. STOWE's Co. B, 8th (HATCH's) Regiment Alabama Cavalry, CSA, was surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama, by LT. GEN. R. TAYLOR (CSA) to GEN. E. R. S. CANBY (USA).  His Company was commanded by CAPT. L. N. COLE.  He appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War, of Co. B, 8th Regiment of Alabama Cavalry, CSA, being paroled in Gainesville, AL, on May 14th.  (This  information per his military record, on file at the National Archives, Washington, D. C.  See STOWE file for photocopy of this  record.)  According to his grandson, Stowe Saxon, in Stowe History, his grandfather LEE STOWE, at age 18, had joined a confederate cavalry under GENERAL J. WHEELER during the last part of the war, when the cavalry came through “this part of the country” on the its way to Mobile.  During his short period of confederate service, his cavalry was engaged in light skirmishes around Mobile.  While they were camped temporarily to rest and stock up on supplies woutside Mobile, the war ended; and he was mustered out to go home.

1865 Aug 15:  JOHN L. D. STOWE (youngest child of ABRAHAM ROBINSON STOWE and his wife SALLIE FRANCES POINDEXTER STOWE) died, at  age 7—probably at home, in Tallapoosa Co., AL.  (Need to prove.)

1865 Nov 16:  ABRAM STOWE's oldest daughter, AMY ELIZABETH (STOWE) BECKETT, the widow of SAMUEL WILSON BECKETT, remarried, to JOHN F. FLOURNOY, with F. M. SANDERS as bondsman, the license granted on 15 Nov, and the ceremony performed the next day, by WILLIAM R. RODGERS, J. P.  Tallapoosa County Alabama Marriage Records, Book 6, page 264.  (See BECKETT file, for photocopy of the record.  Also, see family group sheet for SAMUEL WILSON BECKETT, supplementary section, for further information  regarding AMY BECKETT FLOURNOY's subsequent life and children with JOHN F. FLOURNOY.)

1869 Dec 16:  ISAAC POINDEXTER STOW married TABITHA JANE WARD, at Tallapoosa Co., AL, per Tallapoosa County Alabama Marriage Records, Book 7, page 298.  The license was granted on Dec 6th, with G. W. BALLARD acting as his bondsman, and the ceremony performed by A. G. HOLLOWAY, J. P.  (See STOWE file, for photocopy of the record.)  TABITHA STOWE died in 1885 and was buried in the Old Stowe Cemetery, Tallapoosa Co, AL.  (The inscription on the tombstone was copied in 1979 by Sandra S. Wilson and published in the  book, Some Early Pioneer Settlers of Tallapoosa County Alabama, Vol. 1).  (Inscription reads, "Tabitha Ward wife of I. P. Stow, 1850-1885.")

1870 FEDERAL CENSUS—NEWTONVILLE (FAYETTE), ALABAMA (Township 17, Range 12, taken 12 Jul 1870 by Jno. P. Moon, lines 26-32), page 448B:

Living in Dwelling 26 (Family 26) was the household of J. F. FLORNEY (actually should be Flournoy).  He was 46 years old, a farmer, with real estate valued at $800 and personal estate valued at $500. He was born in GA.  M. E. FLORNEY was age 34, “keeping house,” and born in Alabama.  (This was actually “Amy,” not “M. E.”)  They listed 4 children, all born in AL—(1) F. A. BRAKETT (actually, Francis Ann BECKETT, age 14, occupation given as “attending,” meaning “attending school”), (2) W. W. BRAKETT (actually W. W. BECKETT, age 14, occupation given as “attending,” meaning “attending school,” indicated that he could not read and write), (3) C. F. FLORNEY (this actually being CORNELIUS FRANKLIN FLOURNOY, age 4, “at home”), and (5) J. M. FLORNEY (actually being JOEL MANSON FLOURNOY, age 2).  Also living with the family was AL HOPSON, age 28, a farmer, born in Georgia, could not read or write.  See BECKETT file, for census microfilm images and worksheet.  For more information on this family, see famiy group record for WILLIAM WALTER BECKETT and JOHN F. FLOURNOY.

1870 FEDERAL CENSUS--DADEVILLE (TALLAPOOSA), ALABAMA  (DUFFEY's Beat, taken 25 Jul 1870), page 74 (lines 20-26):

He was born in AL.  His wife TABITHA JANE STOWE was age 20, "keeping house," born in AL.  Both were noted as not being able to read or write.  See STOWE file, for census microfilm images and worksheet.

1870 FEDERAL CENSUS--WALNUT HILL BEAT (TALLAPOOSA), ALABAMA (Jones X Roads Post Office, taken 17 Jun 1870 by Jas. M. Holley, ), pages 129B (lines 38-40) and 130A (lines 1-11):

Living in Dwelling 88 (Family 88) was the household of WILSON STOW (name spelled this way on the record).  He was age 54, a farmer with real estate valued at $600 and personal estate valued at $500, born in NC.  He could not read and write.  TABITHA STOW was age 50, “keeping house,” born in GA (no other spaces marked).  There were 12 other individuals listed in their household—(1) RICHARD STOW (age 22, a farm laborer, born in AL), (2) JACKSON STOW (age 20, born in AL, no other spaces marked for him), (3) ALFORD STOW (age 15, born in AL, could not read and write), (4) ANDREW STOW (age 53, farm laborer, born in NC), (5) NANCY STOW (age 30, “keeping house,” born in SC), (6) FRANCIS STOW (female, age 22, born in AL, could not read), (7) JOHN STOW (age 20, born in AL, could not read), (8) MARION STOW (male, age 18, born in AL, no other spaces marked), (9) ELIZA STOW (age 14, born in AL, could not read), (10) MARTHA STOW (age 7, born in AL, could not read or write), and (11) HENRY STOW (age 4, born in AL), and (12) JACKSON STOW (age 1, born in AL).  Need to prove relationships.  I would guess that the first 3 children are those of Wilson and Talitha Stow.  ANDREW STOW is probably his brother, and the rest are probably children of Andrew Stow.

1870 FEDERAL CENSUS--YOUNGVILLE  (TALLAPOOSA), ALABAMA (taken 21 Aug 1870, by JAMES M. HOLLEY):

Listed on page 17B (Dwelling 126, Family 127) was the household of JOEL STOWE, who was age 20, a farmer, with no real estate value given, but with personal property valued at $300, born in AL.  Wife ENDORA STOWE was age 16, "keeping house," born in Alabama.  (This was probably the oldest child of DR. ISAAC STOWE, as the age is right, since he was supposedly born in 1850, and he was living next to the younger two children of ISAAC STOWE, who were living with REBECCA STOWE.  This would have been ABRAM STOWE's nephew, AMY ELIZABETH STOWE BECKETT's first cousin. )

Listed on page 18 (Dwelling 127, Family 128) was the household of REBECCA STOWE, who was listed as a head of household, age 40, keeping house, with real estate valued at $2500 and personal property valued at $400, born in SC.  Living with her were the two younger children of DR. ISAAC STOWE (ISAAC STOWE had died of smallpox during an epidemic in the area, which he had contracted while helping victims in Coosa County, Alabama; and their mother had died earlier, in 1870)—(1) PERKINS STOWE (age 17, b. in AL, attending school) and (2) NANCY STOWE (age 12, b. in AL, attending school).

Also listed on page 18 (Dwelling 130, Family 131) was the household of NASHE STOWE who was a Black man, age 23, listing his occupation as "earning money."  He probably descended from former slaves of the STOWE family, as it was common practice for them to adopt the surnames of their owners.  He probably was working for them, at this time.

Listed on page 18 (Dwelling 131, Family 132, on lines 17-20) was the household of JOHN SCOTT, who was the uncle of SAMUEL WILSON BECKETT, through his marriage to POLLY STOWE.  He was listed as age 32, with real estate valued at $1500 and personal property valued at $500; and he could read and write.  His wife POLLY STOWE was age 26,  "keeping house," and she could read and write.  They had 2 children, both born in AL—(1) PAMELA SCOTT (age 3) and (2) ADOLPHUS SCOTT (age 1).

Listed on page 18, living in the next dwelling (Dwelling 132, Family 133) was the household of JANE SCOTT, who was age 59, "farming," with no personal property or real estate value listed.  In her household were 3 individuals, all born in AL--(1) GEORGE SCOTT (age 23), (2) JERRY SCOTT (age 21), and (3) ALEXANDER SCOTT (age 14).   All people in the household could read and write.

Also listed on page 18, living in Dwelling 132 (this is the number given, and the next family listed had the next, sequential number, so this must have been intentional) and as Family 134 was the household of ABRAM STOWE, who was age 55, farming, with real estate valued at $1500 and personal property valued at $400, born in NC, and could read and write.  His wife FRANCES STOWE was age 55, "keeping house," also b. in NC and could read and write.  Their children, both born in Alabama, were (1) RACHEL STOWE (age 18, could read and write) and (2) CORDELIA STOWE (age 15, attending school, could read and write).

Living in Dwelling 133 (Family 135), same page, was the household of FRANK SCOTT, who was age 28, a farmer, born in AL.  (No other spaces were marked.)  His wife was CATHERINE SCOTT age 25, born in AL, "keeping house," and they listed 2 small children, both born in AL--(1) WILLIE SCOTT (age 4) and LU SCOTT  (hard to read, age 2, a female).

See STOWE file, for census microfilm images and worksheet.

1886:  According to THOMAS P. STOWE, of Wetumpka, Alabama (1990), there was a big flood of the Tallapoosa River, this year.  It was such a great flood that it changed the course of the river and left part of the STOWE Plantation an island.

1890:  RACHEL ANN STOWE FLOURNOY died, probably at Tallapoosa Co., AL, and was buried in the Old Stowe Cemetery.

1896 November:  The sale of the tract of land for right of way for the Savannah and Memphis Railroad Company, to be laid through the Stow Plantation, was filed in the Probate Court, at Tallapoosa Co., AL, on Nov 9th; it was recorded on Nov 21st.  (See note  above, under 30 Dec 1874)

1907:  A. L. STOWE was residing in Jackson’s Gap (Tallapoosa), AL, per Census or Enumeration of Confederate Soldiers Residing in Alabama, 1907.

1912 May 10:  The land transaction between FRANCIS STOW and I. P. STOWE, was recorded in Tallapoosa Co., AL, and signed by G. J. SORRELL, Judge of Probate.  (See note under 10 Nov 1879.)

1919:  According to THOMAS P. STOWE, of Wetumpka, Alabama (1990), there was another great flood of the Tallapoosa River.  It washed out the railroad bridge, and it washed silver trinkets down river from the Indian settlement area (made by the Indians). Children from the plantation would pick up the silver and sell it for 5 cents a bucket.

1919 Nov 11:  ISAAC POINDEXTER STOWE died at Tallapoosa Co., AL.  He was buried at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, south of Alexander City (Tallapoosa), AL (so. of the intersection of Hwys. 63 and 128).  (Date copied from tombstone 9 Aug 1990, by CCM.)

1923 Nov 17:  A. LEE STOWE died at Tallapoosa Co., AL.  He was buried at Flint Hill Methodist Church Cemetery, beside his wife FRANCIS E. STOWE.  Their double marker reads, "They died as they lived--Christians."  (Copied from tombstone 9 Aug 1990, by CCM.)

1938 Aug 18:  TILLIE PARKER STOWE, second wife of ISAAC P. STOWE, died, per tombstone.  She was buried in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, south of Alexander City (Tallapoosa), Alabama, next to her husband.  Her tombstone reads, “TILLIE PARKER STOWE / WIFE OF I. P. STOWE / Nov 28, 1861 / aug 18, 1930 / Precious mother, we shall meet you in that peaceful home.”(Copied 9 Aug 1990, by CCM)

NOTE:  According to THOMAS STOWE (1990), in the early days, on the STOWE plantation, Indians would sometimes sneak up and try to see the people who lived there.  (They lived up river from the plantation.)  When FRANCIS POINDEXTER STOWE would see them peeking through the bushes or around the outbuildings at her children, she would scoop up her children and carry them to the house, to hide them.  Also, they would see Indians come down the river in canoes carrying silver, but they would never tell other people, for fear of attracting into their area people who would be greedy for the silver. The STOWE, YOUNG, and LOVEJOY families owned big plantations in the area.
