Supplementary Information

Note:  The marriage bond on behalf of JOHN BOWEN and AMERICUS J. BUGG was signed by W. F. BOWEN.  I believe this was the brother of JOHN BOWEN, who was listed in the 1870 Federal Census as WILLIAM BOWEN, living in the household (along with JOHN BOWEN) of SETH BOWEN.  By the time of the 1880 Federal Census JOHN BOWEN had married and was listed in a separate household; but WILLIAM BOWEN was still living in the household of SETH BOWEN, under the name of FRANK BOWEN.  I believe his name was probably WILLIAM FRANK or WILLIAM FRANCIS BOWEN..  All of them were living in Fair Play (Saline), AR, in 1880.  See notes on the 1880 Federal Census, below.  See also family group record for William F. Bowen.

1877 Dec. 9:  JOHN BOWEN of Fairplay (Saline), AR, married AMERICUS J. BUGG (name written this way on the recod), also of Fairplay (Saline), AR, on this date, according to their marriage record.  (Names written just as they are on the record.)  The bond was signed by JOHN BOWEN and W. F. BOWEN, the same day that the license was issued.  He was age 24 at the time that he obtained the license to marry her; and she was age 16.  The license was dated 7 Dec 1877.    The marriage ceremony was performed on 9 Dec 1877.   (The record erroneously bears the year “1878”--incorrect, because the record also states that the marriage was recorded 11 Jan 1898.)  Per Saline County Arkansas Marriage Records, Book D (1875-1879), page 208.  Copy of the record on file.

1879 Apr 24:  MARY ETTA BOWEN was born to JOHN W. BOWEN and his wife ANNIE AMERICUS (BUGG) BOWEN, in Lonsdale (Garland), AR.  (This information is per Dovea Doris Bowen Howard, 1986.  She referred to her as “Aunt Etta.”)

1880 FEDERAL CENSUS—FAIR PLAY (SALINE), ARKANSAS (Supervisor’s District 2, Enumeration District 165, taken 4 and 8 Jun 1880 by A. A. Crawford), Roll T9_56, page 301D (lines 6-17) and page 302A (lines 12-38):

Listed on page 301D (lines 6-12), taken 4 Jun 1880, and living in Dwelling 57 (Family 57) was the household of SETH BOWEN, who was age 60, a farmer, born in SC (both his parents also born in SC).  His wife CLARACY BOWEN was age 48, “keeping house,” born in AL (as were both her parents).  They reported five children living in the household—(1) FRANK BOWEN (son, age 30, single, farm laborer, born in MS), (2) JEFFERSON BOWEN (son, age 19, farm laborer, born in MS), (3) JOSEPH BOWEN (son, age 14, farm laborer, born in LA), (4) NANCY BOWEN (daughter, age 11, born in AR), and (5) FORANC BOWEN (name spelled this way on the record, daughter, age 8, born in AR).  I believe this was the father of JOHN BOWEN.  Copy of census microfilm image and work sheet on file.

Also listed on page 301D (lines 13-17), taken 4 Jun 1880, and living in Dwelling 58 (Family 58) was the household of EDWARD BOWEN, who was age 25, a farmer, born in MS (both his parents born in SC).  His wife SARAH BOWEN was age 22, “keeping house,” born in AR (both her parents born in SC).  They reported two children, both born in AR—(1) WILLIAM BOWEN (age 3) and (2) MARY BOWEN (age 5 months, born Feb 1880).  Copy of census microfilm image and work sheet on file.

Listed on page 302A (lines 12-17), living in Dwelling 69 (Family 69) was the household of GEORGE CLIFT, who was age 33, a farmer born in AR (both his parents born in TN).  His wife NANCY CLIFT was age 36, “keeping house,” born in TN (father’s birth place unknown, mother born in VA).  They reported four children, all born in AR—(1) HATTIE CLIFT (age 11), (2) SUSAN CLIFT (age 9), (3) DANIEL B. CLIFT (age 6), and (4) ARMADILER? CLIFT (daughter, age 1).  Note:  The youngest daughter of William Bugg and Permelia Ann Bugg was Sarah R. Bugg, who married Daniel B. Clift.  This person, George Clift, was probably related to the family.  Copy of census microfilm image and work sheet on file.

Listed on page 302A (lines 18-21), living in Dwelling 70 (Family 70) was the household of JOHN BOWEN, who was age 27, a farmer, born in MS (his father born in SC, his mother’s birth place unknown).  His wife ANNIE BOWEN was age 19, “keeping house,” born in AR (her parents’ birth places unknown).  They had one child—a daughter named MARY BOWEN, who was age 1, born in AR.  Also living in the household was a boarder named JAMES WELSH who was age 30, a farm laborer, born in SC (both his parents born in NC).  Copy of census microfilm image and work sheet on file.

Listed on page 302A (lines 26-28), living in Dwelling 72 (Family 72) was the household of NOAH ROBERTS, who was age 63, a farmer, born in KY (his father born in SC, mother born in SC).  His wife PARMELIA ROBERTS was age 51, “keeping house,” born in GA (birth places of parents unknown).  They reported one child—a daughter named MARTHA ROBERTS, who was age 10, born in AR.  Copy of census microfilm image and work sheet on file.

Listed on page 302A (lines 37-38), living in Dwelling 74 (Family 74) was the household of SARAH A. BOWEN, who was a widow, age 50, “keeping house,” born in SC (as were both her parents).  She reported one child living in the household—a son named JOHN A. BOWEN, age 19, born in MS.  I believe Sarah A. Bowen was the widow of William H. Bowen, who was the brother of Seth Bowen, the aunt (by marriage) of John Bowen (husband of Annie, see note above).  Copy of census microfilm image and work sheet on file.

1881 Apr 19:  LULA HELEN BOWEN was born to JOHN W. BOWEN and his wife ANNIE AMERICUS (BUGG) BOWEN, in Lonsdale (Garland), AR.  She married JOHN N. WESTBROOK.  (This information is per Dovea Doris Bowen Howard, 1986.)

John Bowen and Annie Bugg’s home and store.

1885 Dec 25:  JOHN WILLIAM B\OWEN was born to John and Annie (Bugg) Bowen.  He subsequently married CORDELIA M. RODDEN (born in Rondo, AR on 4 Nov 1919), per their son BILL BOWEN (correspondence with CCM, May 2004, see BOWEN file for copy of the email.)  BILL BOWEN recalled the following about his father and uncle EDWARD DAVIS BOWEN:  “I have fond memories of my Uncle Ed (Edward Bowen).  As a very young boy I visited him in his apartment in North Little Rock.  My father owned a produce wholesale company and Uncle Ed was a produce peddler back in the days when they used to drive through neighborhoods selling produce.  He would get his products from my dad.  He was a nice man.”
